NPHC Gardens

Construction on the much-anticipated NPHC Garden/Legacy Plaza project began at the end of March. The project includes demolition and construction to install a new granite plaza, brick walks, nine recognition columns, stormwater control devices including ‘sylva cells’ located in the Student Academic Services Building (SASB) Courtyard, between SASB North and SASB South. The scope of work will include a redesign & construction of new pedestrian pathways, construction of new landscape and open space, and storm drainage and utility work required to accommodate the proposed site redesign.

The construction is on target to unveil the NPHC legacy plaza by Homecoming this Fall. Fundraising is ongoing and donations can be made at https://www.uncnphc.com/garden.

Leadership Opportunities

In January, FSL held the President’s Leadership Academy with all 53 chapter presidents in attendance. This two-day retreat develops intellectual, interpersonal and emotional skills of Fraternity and Sorority student leaders. With the help of UNC Student Government’s Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Outreach Committee, FSL facilitated an implicit bias training workshop to educate students on how to be more aware of unconscious biases, how they affect day to day interactions and how to dissolve the barriers they create on both a personal and institutional level.

FSL is also initiating eighteen students into the Xi Sigma chapter of Order of Omega. Shout out to those being initiated:

  • Kayla Baresich
  • Lydia Comer
  • Avery Harris

Improving the process

Seteena Turner worked this Spring to improve the FSL grade report process. She helped students better understand how to navigate and update their organization’s Heel Life page and created a step-by-step guide for FSL leaders to use in the future as they transition out or into their roles. This ensures that processes are followed efficiently. Her hard work made a tremendously positive impact on the FSL community.

We want to send congratulations to Seteena as she begins her new position with CNBC. She will be advising the comprehensive sponsorship strategy for CNBC business news network and cultivating sponsors post sale on the production side. She will also be serving as a lead member of their Communications team! Best of luck Seteena!

Keeping the FSL community connected

Headshot of Kayla

Special kudos goes to Kayla Bryant who worked to support Fraternity and Sorority Life this Spring! She has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the office.

From Kayla Bryant, OFSL Work Study Student
“I have been a work-study student with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life since September 2017 and have made tons of great memories and some even better friends during my time with FSL. I’ve worked on various projects, such as t-shirt design for events and leadership retreats, activity coordination for National Hazing Prevention Week, created a newsletter for the presidents of all our organizations, and much more. One of my favorite things I have done during my time with FSL is helping with the annual awards banquet held each semester. During this event we ate and socialized with members of the fraternity and sorority community while celebrating the achievements of the past year. During the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, I had the opportunity to create a newsletter for the Fraternity and Sorority Life office. Because the members of our community were forced apart during the pandemic, the newsletter was a great way to reach out to all our organizations and remain connected during this unprecedented and isolating time. We highlighted student and organization achievements and provided information about virtual events.”
