Our Re-opening Superheroes

Photo of Cleaning and new arrangement of seating and eating areas in the Carolina Union

Let’s start by praising the people who have led the way in making sure our building was both organized and sanitized for a safe re-opening. They are: Rustin McNiff, Noelle Oxboel, James Selby, Todd McLamb, Erick Twaite, Theo Nix, Juan Chavez, Zoila Rivas, Jakeba Atwater, Shakeya Ducksworth, Salvador Valdovinos, Yesenia Maldonado, Yesenia Ayala.

They moved and sanitized more than 1,750 pieces of furniture, including chairs, couches, benches and tables. (That’s more than 130 pieces of furniture each!) They continue to clean, sanitize and make necessary adjustments to keep us safe. We are so appreciative of their effort!

SLL Stays Active

In SLL, Tammy Lambert has taken the lead on developing a new student organization manual with lots of great detail and information as student organization leaders try to navigate the uncertainty of the new semester. This resource will help groups stay up and running and the semester gets underway.

The SLL team has led the way in a huge increase in use of the HeelLife platform, with numbers more than doubling over the last academic year! HeelLife received almost 2 million views on its homepage, and more than 100 events are already listed on HeelLife for this fall. This adoption will be very important to maintaining student involvement as more programming goes digital this year.

Finally, SLL has helped the Carolina Union Activities board as they hosted 26 virtual events over the summer, engaging more than 900 people.

FSL Ready for Fall

Our FSL team has been working hard to get their houses and membership ready for the semester. Ion Outterbridge, Cassie Hughes, Berengére Phillips, and Seteena Turner have worked with UNC, local, and national chapter officials to establish re-occupancy guidelines for houses.

Their team has also successfully hosted a first-ever virtual NPHC summit, with approximately 25 chapter leaders attending throughout the day. Next up is virtual recruitment! FSL is helping IFC and Panhellenic chapters change decades-old recruitment traditions so that this process can be conducted safely online. IFC Recruitment will “kick off” via Zoom on August 16. Panhellenic will be September 2.

CCS Hosting AMA

Many of you have tuned into the Carolina Union’s new Ask Me Anything series. Shoutout to Keith Hines in CCS for creating and organizing the series, which has featured Bubba Cunningham, Becci Menghini, and Shelly Terry. Honors and Awards

Congratulations to Joe Singer for being named an Award of Distinction recipient at the 2020 Student Affairs virtual end-of-year celebration. Joe was cited for his leadership in overseeing the Auditorium renovation and our transition to the new reservations system: “[Joe] goes beyond the normal scope of expectations and is always thinking of ways to create administrative efficiencies that will help staff in the department to do great work.” This praise is no surprise to those of us who work with Joe every day, and we are happy to see Joe recognized for his work!

Honors and Awards

The Union has some great representation on UNC Event Life, a council of event planners throughout the UNC community. Our own Victoria Boykin was recently named vice president of the board of directors, and Beth Morris is chair of the communications committee. Thanks for leading the way, Victoria and Beth!
