Vaccine Trial Volunteers Needed

Thanks to Haydée Marchese for calling attention to an opportunity to participate in COVID-19 vaccine trials at UNC. The sign-up registry is available in both English and Spanish and is primarily for people who may have increased risk of COVID-19 exposure because of their employment, living, family, age or health condition, or those from racial and ethnic groups that have been impacted in greater numbers such as Black, LatinX, American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian. It also includes general educational information about clinical trial phases, antibodies, and vaccines. Enter the code CHNC at sign up to be directed specifically to the UNC study site for follow-up contact.

SLL Programs

It’s been an impressive semester of programs and events for the Student Life & Leadership team! They kept students engaged with multiple virtual and remote programs that created leadership development opportunities and helped student organizations thrive despite the challenges of 2020. The creativity and perseverance required to deliver this programming is remarkable, and numbers speak for themselves!

.

.

  • 30 total consultations for student organizations to help officers receive guidance to prepare for the year.
  • The Student Organizations Leadership Retreat was held in August with over 100 participants, and multiple campus partners facilitated sessions as well as the Carolina Union staff lunch panel!
  • SmallFest, a virtual version of FallFest, was held at the beginning of the semester and again in late September in collaboration with New Students & Family Programs. The two SmallFest events drew more than 700 student participants and 271 student organizations.
  • Both the Spark and North Carolina Fellows retreats took place virtually this September, with increased attendance and participation from years past.
  • Leadership Week and the Bell Leadership Symposium in mid-October reached approximately 110 students.
  • Two workshops hosted with Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program reached 160 students.
  • Student Activities distributed 100 books for Common Reads in celebration of Latinx Heritage Month and National Coming Out Day.
  • Three LEAD Instagram Live Chats received 230 views.
  • SLL helped students complete 30 Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test consultations.

Partners’ Praise for SLL

Not surprisingly, SLL’s hard work earned praise from their partners. First from Dr. Gerald Bell, founder of the Bell Leadership Institute, which is the partner organization for the Bell Leadership Symposium:

Dr. Bell wanted to send along his utmost gratitude for making last Saturday possible and successful!! He recognizes all the work that goes on behind the scenes to enable these events to be pulled off without a hitch – in person or virtually – and wanted to say thank you for all of your hard work and efforts. He enjoyed being able to participate in the morning and was impressed with the other speakers he was able to listen to.

Second comes from Beth Ann Wilber of the Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program, which SLL worked with to facilitate a leadership workshop:

We loved hosting you for our event, as always! We so appreciate that you’re easy to work with, and really keep our students entertained throughout the activity. We are grateful for you!

Student Shoutouts

All of SLL’s success this semester of course would not be possible without the help of some amazing students supporting their team. Snaps go out to:

  • The NC Fellows Student Leadership Coordinators for completely rethinking recruitment to fit into a virtual format! They are Theresa Weber and Jaspreet Bhutani.
  • SLL Office Assistants for remaining on the front lines: Georgia Wenstrand, Destiny Moore, Emily Gafcovich, Kyle Beaman, Jailyn Neville, Abigail Rutledge, Emily Andersen, Kirah Bryant, Everson Moran, Samaria Parker, Lacy Mckee.
  • Diversity Outreach Coordinator Irfaun Karim – co chairing the MLK Celebration committee with Diversity & Inclusion (first big project on the job!)

Congratulations, Sydney!

Congratulations to Sydney Howell for two big life events: An engagement and a new home! Sydney and Antonio are planning to get married in October of 2021. Check out the pic from their proposal!
